Ballande was an influential twentieth-century French painter, illustrator, and curator. Best recognized for his highly luminous Post-Impressionist landscapes, he enjoyed a diverse career that spanned gritty social realism, official war reportage, and major public decorative commissions. His paintings are in public collections including the Musée d'Orsay and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
