Gilbery’s talent as an artist was first noticed aged 17, when his portrait of his father was hung in the Royal Academy. He gained a scholarship to St Martin’s and later the Royal College of Art, where he studied under tutors such as Roland Pitchforth, Sir William Rothenstein and Gilbert Spencer. He would make living primarily from portraiture, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the New England Art’s Club. This is is a study for a painted self portrait.
