Gilbery’s talent as an artist was first noticed aged 17, when his portrait of his father was hung in the Royal Academy. He gained a scholarship to St Martin’s and later the Royal College of Art, where he studied under tutors such as Roland Pitchforth, Sir William Rothenstein, and Gilbert Spencer. He would make a living primarily from portraiture, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the New England Art’s Club. This is a study for a painted self-portrait.
