Camp was a prominent British painter and teacher renowned, in part, for his intimate figure compositions.Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, Camp studied at the Edinburgh College of Art under William Gillies and John Maxwell before serving as a influential lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Art for over two decades (1963–1988).

Following his move to London in the late 1970s and 1980s, Camp's focus shifted increasingly to male figures, urban spaces, and light-filled coastal settings. His work frequently depicts young, weightless male figures—bathers, joggers, lovers, and hang-gliders. To enhance the feeling of floating and emotional closeness, Camp often rejected standard rectangular frames. He used octagonal, diamond, and oval canvases to envelop his male nudes and couples, creating a tightly focused, voyeuristic, yet deeply affectionate vantage point.

Camp’s depictions of male bodies radiate warmth, passion, and erotic freedom. His legacy rests on his rare ability to blend classical figurative draftsmanship with a modern, unabashed celebration of erotic desire and human connection.
