Cayford was a graphic designer and illustrator who worked in London during the post-war period. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in the 1950s, he taught at the London College of Printing for many years. His works depicting the male form stemmed from his love of figurative art. “I just drew for absolute pleasure, and my work became much freer over time. That’s why some of the proportions are wrong — like some legs being far too long — but it doesn’t matter”.

For much of Cayford’s life, homosexuality was illegal. Even after decriminalisation, attitudes were not accepting, especially towards overtly homoerotic art. However, later in life, as society became more tolerant, Cayford began to exhibit predominantly in the London area. Many of his works are in private collections. Due to his advanced age and lack of gallery representation, Cayford’s work had been overlooked for many years. Shortly before his death in December 2025, he was delighted to see his work being appreciated by a new audience. Henry Miller Fine Art represents the estate of George Cayford, and all the works on display are from the estate.
