This work depicts Alan and his dog, Bella, on Michael’s balcony in his home in West London. Paintings featuring dogs and reflections, are themes which he revisited throughout the 1970s. This is one of many pictures from the 1970s and 80s, in which Michael painted people with their pets, including many of his friends from the art world. However, the last in the series is his portrait of the Queen with one of her favourite corgis, now in the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.  The painting features in the book by Patrick Bade, Michael Leonard, Painter and Illustrator, 2021 (Peter Owen Publishers), at p.89.
