Before transitioning toward fine art, Michael established himself as a highly successful commercial artist and freelance illustrator. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, his precise, polished draughtsmanship made him a sought-after talent for major advertising campaigns, book jackets, and top editorial magazines. He worked for publications such as, the Sunday Times, Reader’s Digest, and as here, Vogue. The drawing was commissioned by Vogue, to announce Christopher Reeve to the world, in his new role as Superman. The drawing was based on photographs by Eva Sereny.
