Dan Kane is an American-born photographer originally from South Dakota who relocated to Berlin in 1983. Moving to Germany in the early 1980s, Kane developed an extensive body of work over several decades, captured through a dedication to analog film and traditional, large-format camera techniques.

Kane’s artistic legacy is heavily shaped by his focus on the male body, studio portraiture, and figurative studies. Across long-running projects—such as his series gathered in publications like Body Remember—Kane produced black-and-white analog studio works depicting male nudes. His portraits emphasize physical form, light, texture, and intimate male imagery. In his Kulisse series, for example, Kane juxtaposed models against stark backgrounds.By placing the living flesh and form of his male subjects inside abandoned, decaying architectural spaces, he highlighted the vital, healthy human body through strong visual contrasts.

Working strictly with physical film and large-format process rather than digital technology, Kane treats the human form with a reflective, archival quality. The tactile nature of his film photography lends a distinct physical presence, nuance, and classic sensitivity to his depictions of male models.
