Tsarouchis was a gay Greek modernist painter and set designer who achieved international fame, and was "known in particular for his homoerotic subjects," including soldiers, sailors, and nude males. Possible of Dominique, one of his favourite models, it is likely that this was drawn during the artist’s period in exile in Paris, during the Greek military dictatorship (1967-1974). “At that time [1973], I was engrossed in that new type of youth with long hair and clothes usually bought in flea markets, embodying the traditional French with a touch of revolution.”
