Bianchi’s name is synonymous with American photography of the male nude over the last 40 years. His Polaroids, particularly on Fire Island, Bianchi’s work was ground-breaking in his celebration of gay life from the late 70s onwards. In 1988, “I turned my focus to a book of photographs, ‘Out of the Studio’, dedicated to the memory of my lover. That book broke new ground in that it was candidly about gay men, naked and affectionately connected to one another.” This photograph is taken around that time, and possibly from the series entitled within the book, ‘California Pool Figures’.
