Alexis Douillard, (French 1835-1905), Preparatory Study, c.1895

£500.00

Pencil and white chalk on paper, signed (lower left), 30cm x 24cm, (50cm x 40cm in mount), unframed.

Douillard was a painter of classical and religious subjects of note, and church frescoes. He trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the 1850s. This drawing is a study for the bust of the Roman soldier within a composition of a large mural painting by the artist, at the back of the chapel of Saint Joseph of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Julien-Saint-François in Tours. (the attribution of the subject is by the art historian Alain Prévet.)
