Douillard was a painter of religious subjects of note, and church frescoes. He trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the 1850s. This is a preparatory study for the head of one of the companions of Saint Louis in the large mural painting, the Death of Saint Louis in Tunis, 1878-1882, in the choir of the church of Saint-Louis in Paimboeuf (Loire-Atlantique), also known as the Chapel of the Sacred Heart. (the attribution of the subject is by the art historian Alain Prévet.)
