McCarthy was a canonical figure in post-war British figurative art, universally recognized as a premier twentieth-century master of the male form. Nurtured in East London, McCarthy devoted his extensive career almost entirely to documenting the masculine physique. He captured powerful male encounters, intense psychological intimacies, and the complexities of modern queer identity.
