International Shipping

Domestic and International Shipping

Henry Miller Fine Art has extensive experience of shipping artworks both domestically and internationally. Many people understandably think that shipping is a complicated and time-consuming process. It is undoubtedly true that some countries’ customs procedures are more complex than others, but most have very smooth advanced processes, which result in hassle-free shipments. All shipments sent out by Henry Miller Fine Art are monitored by the gallery and our independent shippers; advice and assistance will be provided in the unlikely event that it is needed.

Unframed works are sent out by the gallery and domestic shipping is free. International shipping of unframed works is at cost and, on average, as little as £30-40, depending on size.

All framed works are professionally packed and sent by our shippers, who are accredited by LAPADA (the Association of Art and Antiques Dealers). The cost of shipping pictures, if purchased through the online gallery, will be added at the checkout. For larger and more expensive pictures and sculpture, individual shipping quotes can be provided on request.

Despite the imposition of new tariffs on imports into the United States, shipping of works of art remains free from federal import duty. For all works with a value of $2500 and over (including the shipping costs), a merchandise processing fee (MPF) of 0.3464% of the commercial value is charged. The minimum charge is $32.71. Usually, the shipping company will charge a nominal fee on top of this, so on average for a work valued at $10,000 the cost will be around $75.

Following Brexit, shipments from the UK into the 27 members of the European Union are now subject to import VAT at different rates which are individually calculated by each country. In many EU countries, works of art are taxed at a reduced rate. For example, France charges 5.5% import VAT, while Belgium charges 6%.

When shipping internationally, if import duties are applicable, the shipping company will contact the receiver with a link to pay any outstanding fees often in advance of the work reaching customs. It is usually a very straightforward process. To smooth the shipping process where import duties will be payable, it is sometimes possible for the duties and taxes to be paid in advance of shipping.

Do not hesitate to get in touch, should you have any question regarding shipping.
