He has numerous other public works, including at the Armed Forces Memorial. Most recently, he created from life portraits of King Charles and the Queen.
Michael Leonard, (British, 1933-2023), Night Pictures, c.1975, Pencil on paper, Dated ‘Oct 22’ (lower right)
28cm x 20cm (44cm x 35cm framed), £4,500
This is an early work by Michael in which he is exploring a repeated motif in his work, dressing and undressing. The work is from the 1970s, and explores Michael repeated motif or dressing and undressing. It is a transitional piece in that although it is not one of his highly finished 'tonal' or colour drawings, the main figure has elements of tonal shading. It is considerably developed more than one of Michael's line drawings. You can see from the smaller compositions around the edge that he was exploring different pictures. In 1976, he created at least one coloured pencil drawing called 'dressing at night'. his note in the top right corner, suggest that he was exploring creating coloured drawings.
Emil Block, (German 1884-1966), Sendung, c.1920s, Gouache on paper, Titled (verso), 44cm × 23cm (56cm × 39cm framed), £1,350
Emil Block completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Leipzig, then working in the studio of church painter Richard Schultz until 1904 and in the studio of Richard Hesse between 1913 and 1945. He painted murals for restaurants and cafés, designed stained glass windows, and carried out various types of restoration work. He taught himself to paint portraits, figurative subjects, landscapes, and still lifes. Block increasingly worked as an oil and watercolor painter and as a draftsman. He painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and animal pictures, as well as allegorical and mythological scenes. This work definitely has a homoerotic flavour, rooted in the traditions of German Romanticism.
